Friday has been a big day of portal entries and the most significant one of the day came in the running room.
As first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals, Tar Heel running back Davion Gause will enter his name into the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
In his two seasons with the program, Gause played in 24 games, including the lone start of his career in last year’s Fenway Bowl against Connecticut. As a true freshman in 2024 he played 164 snaps and ran for 326 yards and four touchdowns on 67 carries and caught four passes for 45 yards. This season, in what was supposed to be a breakout year for him, he ran for 259 yards and three touchdowns on just 61 carries and caught 16 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in just 231 snaps.
Gause’s departure is a significant one in the backfield for the Tar Heels considering he was the team’s most consistent runner and the best change of pace to Demon June. The good news is that the team has plenty of depth in the room and is bolstered by the addition of Crew Davis from Wednesday, but this is not a loss that should be taken lightly because of how much potential he had.
