Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Sticking With Billy Edwards Jr. at QB
Despite a rough showing against the Clemson Tigers and calls for a new quarterback from the fanbase, the staff is sticking by fifth year senior Billy Edwards Jr. heading into the game with Notre Dame.
Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed that Edwards will be the guy against the Fighting Irish on Monday morning during his presser. When asked if he expects to move forward with Edwards as the starting quarterback, the second-year Tar Heel head coach simply said “I do.”
He also spoke specifically on the game against Clemson and everything that went into the issues for Edwards. "Offensively, we stalled a little bit in that game,” Belichick stated on Monday. Some of it was Clemson, some of it was us. But in the end, it's team execution. It doesn't' all come back to one guy even though everyone wants to focus on the quarterback. We don’t want to get into a musical chairs game there. That’s not the idea. Just improve our overall consistency and performance. I feel like we’ve done that, and there’s still obviously plenty of work to do.”
For now, it appears that sticking with Edwards might be the best case scenario at quarterback, but this staff needs to keep working to try and get the other quarterbacks ready for a change at some point. While it might be true that Edwards gives you the best chance against the Fighting Irish this weekend, it’s hard to believe that the issues that he has shown with inaccuracy and happy feet are going to magically disappear. For now, we’re going to choose to trust this staff, mainly Bobby Petrino, that this is what the team needs. If Edwards does respond and can help this team score some points in this difficult three game stretch that starts on Saturday, then great. If not, that Syracuse game might be the perfect time to make a change to see what you have in the younger quarterbacks. It’s in his hands to decide what happens.
