Heel Tough Blog: Third Player Steps Away from UNC Football

For a second straight day and the third time in the last week, the Tar Heels have lost a member of their offense to the transfer portal.

As first reported by TarHeel247, redshirt sophomore Paul Billups II has stepped away from the program after three seasons. The report also said that multiple sources are saying he could medically retire after an injury plagued career with the team, but that the move has not officially been confirmed. He was not active for any of the Tar Heels first four games this season.

In his three seasons in Chapel Hill, Billups saw action in 13 games, playing 185 snaps, including 149 of them coming on the offensive side of the ball. 135 of those snaps came last season across 11 games for the team where he hauled in four catches for 27 yards, the only catches that he made in his career.

His departure does take away a depth piece at wide receiver, but it was clear that he was not part of the rotation at wide receiver and wasn’t a contributor on special teams. This will provide more practice reps for the younger guys, which can only help the team moving forward.
