Heel Tough Blog: Trimble Picks Hubert Davis, UNC Over Favored Michigan

Updated: Jun 23, 2021

It’s been a long hard month of recruiting for new head coach Hubert Davis, and his basketball staff, as they’ve been busy hosting recruits, and scouting players at various AAU events. Today that hard work paid off as Seth Trimble, the four-star combo guard out of Menomonee Falls announced he has committed to North Carolina, over the favored Michigan Wolverines. This comes after Trimble was on campus last week, where he was accompanied by his older brother and former Tar Heel, J.P. Tokoto. Even after a great visit in Chapel Hill, it was still believed that Michigan was the favorite for Trimble, as he had made it known that was his school of choice. All of that changed once Trimble announced he was committing today, less than a week after visiting UNC, thus turning the momentum in North Carolina’s favor. Trimble was on campus at the same time as five-star point guard Jaden Bradley, and UNC figures to be very much in the hunt for Bradley’s services. In years past recruits would’ve gone elsewhere had they known that the school was recruiting multiple highly regarded players at the same position, but this is a new era of Carolina Basketball. The Tar Heels are most likely going to play with multiple lead guards at the same time, as that is the vision for the program under Hubert Davis. And after the disastrous 2019-20 season, and the constant change at the point guard position, there’s no such thing as too much back court depth.

Trimble now becomes the second commit of the 2022 class, but he’s easily the headliner. Trimble joins Will Shaver, a three-star big man from Alabama as the only commits in next year’s class as of right now, as Davis continues to piece together his first class as head coach. Seth is coming off a fantastic junior season where he averaged over 23.3 points per game, to go along with 5.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. At 6-2, Trimble is a dynamic playmaker that loves attacking and finishing at the rim. His rebounding prowess is impressive, and will be needed as UNC shifts away from their traditional two post player lineup, and becomes more guard orientated moving forward. Simply put, Trimble is a perfect fit for what Hubert Davis wants out of his guards in his program.

Even with the commitment of Trimble, the Tar Heels aren’t done this week. On Saturday, four-star wing Justin Taylor will announce his commitment, as UNC made his final five schools. North Carolina is in contention along with hometown Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Indiana.
