The last few days were focused on the guys who were either entering the transfer portal or pulling their names out to return to the Tar Heels, but in the last 24 hours, the team has received the news that two players will be returning for next season who are on the current roster.
It started last night when sophomore wide receiver Chris Culliver announced that he will be returning after speculation prior to the NC State game that he would be transferring. Culliver played in eleven games this season and is coming off a career receiving game against NC State where he caught two passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Entering the Fenway Bowl, he has caught six of his 16 targets for 135 yards and a touchdown while also averaging 41.3 yards and having scored a touchdown as the team’s kick returner.
He is joined by fellow sophomore Kaleb Cost, who announced his return on Friday afternoon. Cost, who started every game of the regular season this year in the team’s STAR position, finished the regular season with 56 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 0.5 a sack, two interceptions and five pass breakups. The team is hoping that he can be better, though, in coverage than he was this season where he allowed a 66.7% completion rate, 629 yards and four touchdowns.
These are two important retentions by the new staff that both should make big contributions to next year’s team.
