The scheduling for college football and basketball programs never takes time off, as coaches are always having to plan for the future. Earlier today, it was reported by both Jeff Borzello of ESPN and Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports that the Tar Heels and the Butler Bulldogs have inked a home-and-home, beginning next year. UNC will host Butler in Chapel Hill next year, before making the return trip the falling year to the iconic Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The two programs have played more than you probably think, having squared off six times previously. Butler won the first-ever matchup, back in 1928-29, earning a 43-20 win. The only time they’ve played in Chapel Hill was back in 1994, which was a win for North Carolina. The last time the two schools played one another was back in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, a 92-80 win for Carolina, on their way to winning the national championship.

Butler becomes the second Big East school to be featured on UNC’s schedule for next season, as Carolina will be finishing up a home-and-home with the Georgetown Hoyas. With the ACC going back down to 18 games, it was done in an effort to increase non-conference competition, and UNC has responded, adding power conference competition to the schedule, in addition to all of the events the program has committed to, like the CBS Sports Classic, the ACC/SEC Challenge, and others.
