In the midst of all of the excitement about the the upcoming opening to the early signing window on Wednesday for the Tar Heels’ 2026 class, the news of a new decommitment has flown under the radar a bit.
As he announced via social media on Tuesday evening, 2026 3✮ S Darien Lewis is no longer signing with the Tar Heels today and will instead be signing with UNLV. Lewis, who had been committed to the Tar Heels since July 2nd, took an official visit to Vegas back in June and it’s clear that Dan Mullen and his staff had stayed in touch with him, leading to this decision.
This decision shouldn’t really come as a shock with some of the lower rated commits that have been bailing out due to being overrecruited which is the case here, as well. The Tar Heels are still expected to sign 4✮ Jakob Weatherspoon, 3✮ Jamarrion Gordon and 3✮ Julian Burns at the position, so there shouldn’t be any worries here.
