The Tar Heels have yet to land a commitment from a wide receiver in this class, but they are a finalist for their three top targets at their position.
On Monday, 247Sports reported that 2025 4✮ WR Micah Matthews is the latest Tar Heel target to name the team a finalist and announce his commitment. Virginia, Virginia Tech and Utah join the Tar Heels in his final four, all schools that were part of Matthews’ five official visit stops throughout the past few months. Matthews will announce his decision next Wednesday, July 10th.
Regarding where things stand in this recruitment, it feels like he could land at any of the four0 schools. Virginia Tech has been the slight favorite for almost the entire way with Virginia and Carolina just slightly off the pace. One factor that could favor the Tar Heels is the fact that he is a dual sport athlete and will be looking to play baseball at the college level along with football. It’s hard to tell how big of a factor that will play, though, with him holding dual offers from all four of these schools that he will be deciding between. The official visits didn’t seem to push anyone into a comfortable pole position, meaning this decision could be a true toss up heading in.
Matthews would be a welcome addition to the class after a huge junior season at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater, VA. He caught 86 passes for 1,476 yards and 16 touchdowns on his way to first team all-state honors. He would also earn first team all-state honors on the diamond as well.
