Heel Tough Blog: Chip Lindsey Leaving Chapel Hill to Be Michigan OC

Sports Illustrated

While the Tar Heel coaching search rolls along with no end in sight, there is news that one of the team’s current coordinators is closing in on taking a new job.

As first reported by Matt Zeintz of On3 Sports, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is leaving the Tar Heels for the Michigan Wolverines offensive coordinator job. This is the second straight offensive coordinator to leave Chapel Hill for a job in the Big Ten after Phil Longo departed back in 2022 for Wisconsin.

In his two years as the team’s offensive coordinator, the team averaged 33.4 points per game, 457.3 yards of total offense, 266.6 yards passing and 190.8 yards rushing. This season was a step back after having one of the nation’s best offenses a year ago, as the team averaged just 32.3 points per game, the fewest since 2018, and 423.4 yards of total offense, the fewest since 2017.

There is a good chance that Lindsey wasn’t going to return in 2025 under the team’s new coach, but this is a move that likely would have happened even if Mack Brown was returning. Add this to the list of things the program has to replace, one that is growing by the minute.
