Heel Tough Blog: No Recruits to Attending UNC Home Opener as Penalty for Recruiting Violations
According to multiple reports, the Tar Heels will not have recruits at Saturday’s home opener in Kenan Stadium against East Tennessee State as part of a penalty for recruiting violations.
Anna Adams of TarHeel247 was the first to report the news earlier this morning and it was later confirmed by national analysts from On3 Sports and Inside Carolina’s Don Callahan.
A program spokesperson released a statement about the penalty earlier this afternoon. “Last season we self-reported a violation through our normal university compliance measures. As a result, we are unable to host unofficial visits this weekend versus ETSU. We are still permitted to host official visits this weekend but have decided as a program to concentrate our official visits on the remaining five home games. The situation has been properly resolved through the NCAA process, and we have worked with the NCAA and University compliance on appropriate and corrective action.”
Per Noah Weiskopf of TarHeel247, the recruiting infraction is separate from the incident that led to Tar Heel defensive backs coach Armond Hawkins being suspended in the middle of last season due to violating rules related to extra benefits.
The good news is that the expectation is that the rest of the home games won’t be affected in any way, but this is a tough look for this staff, especially in this era of college sports.
