Heel Tough Blog: Steve Belichick Resigns from Defensive Coordinator Position

Another week, another resignation for Tar Heel football.

As first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN, Tar Heel defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned as the program’s defensive coordinator effective October 27th at the end of his medical leave. His resignation comes after he was placed on that leave back in early August after not joining the team for fall camp.

The program released a statement to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos shortly after the news of the resignation. “The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.”

Earlier this month, a report from WRAL said that part of the internal investigation into the program involved questions being asked about Steve Belichick and alleged drug use. It is unclear at this time whether those allegations were proven true leading to this move.

With Steve Belichick resigning, defensive play calling duties will remain in the hands of Brian Belichick, the team’s safeties coach, who has called the first two games according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Former college defensive coordinator and current defensive line coach Bob Diaco will likely also have a big hand in helping formulate things on that side of the ball. So far, through the first two games of the season, the Tar Heel defense ranks fifth nationally in points per game allowed (6.5) and 41st in total yards per game allowed (268.0).
