On a day where the Tar Heels picked up a sizable commitment in the 2027 class, they have now lost a significant member of that class to a flip.
As first reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, 2027 3✮ S Chuck Roberts has flipped his commitment from UNC to Maryland. His flip comes in the midst of an official visit with the Terrapins which began on Friday. Roberts had been committed to the Tar Heels since December.
Roberts, the No. 580 overall prospect and No. 52 safety in the 2027 class according to the Rivals Industry ratings, is preparing for his senior season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. In nine games this season, he amassed 50 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, an interception and three pass breakups. According to Rivals, he allowed just three passes to be caught the entire season. In eight games the previous season, he collected 17 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks and three pass breakups in his first season with IMG. In his freshman season at Bishop Academy in Mission Hills, CA, he finished with second team All-Freshman honors from MaxPreps after piling up 104 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble.
Don’t let the star rating fool you; this is a significant loss for the Tar Heels in this class. Roberts is a very talented young prospect at a major position of need in the 2027 class that now is without a commitment. The Tar Heels now need to work quickly to find at least one commitment which will hopefully come from this group of official visitors.
One target that might get more attention now is 3✮ S Marcus Jones, who is taking a visit to Chapel Hill this weekend. Fellow 3✮ S Alan Blackshere will also see the heat turned up on him if he makes his visit to campus next weekend.
