For the second time today, the Tar Heels have gone to the SEC to add someone out of the transfer portal.
After landing Florida defensive back transfer Gregory Smith III earlier in the day on Wednesday, the team has reportedly signed Arkansas tight end transfer Shamar Easter, according to Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at the college level.
Easter, who was ranked as the No. 2 tight end available in the portal prior to his commitment, spent the first two seasons of his college career in Fayetteville with the Razorbacks but rarely saw the field. He saw action in just one game over the course of the two years, playing five total snaps between offense and special teams against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opening week of this past season. Back in high school, Easter showed his receiving prowess. As a senior, he only caught 15 passes for 160 yards, but he also ran for 116 yards and a touchdown on six carries. The year prior, as a junior, he was much more successful, catching 30 passes for 519 yards and five touchdowns.
This is a low-risk, high-reward addition for the Tar Heels at tight end with the depth that they already have in the room. He’ll join returnees Jake Johnson and Timmy Lawson and South Carolina transfer Connor Cox as the guys that will be battling for reps at the tight end position in the fall with Easter having a legitimate shot at reps this season.
