Sunday was a big day of portal commitments for the Tar Heels with the team landing four throughout the course of the day. The final commitment came from a transfer tight end that wasn’t on many radars heading into the day.
As first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from Colorado State transfer tight end Jaxxon Warren after he took a visit to campus over the weekend. He has three years of eligibility remaining at the college level.
Warren, who measures in at 6’7, 255 lbs., entered the transfer back in late December following two seasons at Colorado State. After not playing a single snap a year ago for the Rams, he played 112 snaps in the first two games of the season, providing plenty of promise before going down with a lower body injury that cost him the remainder of the season. In the season opener against Washington, he hauled in six of his 11 targets for 79 yards and a touchdown and graded out solidly as a run blocker. He was a little quieter in the second game of the season against Northern Colorado, but did haul in a one pass for 16 yards and graded out well as a run blocker.
Prior to his time at Colorado State, Warren spent a season at Navarro Junior College where he played in nine games and caught 17 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. That season came after he transferred from North Texas after spring ball in 2023.
This is a really solid addition for the Tar Heels at the tight end position and one that provides plenty of potential. In a room that simply needs bodies, this is a guy that looks like he has the ability to be the type of receiving threat that the room simply lacked this season. Nothing is guaranteed, but this feels like the most promising pick up that the team made on Sunday.
