After losing some players in their 2026 class in the past two weeks, the Tar Heels completed another flip on Thursday morning.
As first reported by Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, 2026 4✮ ATH David Davis has flipped his commitment from Penn State to UNC after taking a visit to Chapel Hill this past weekend for the team’s win over the Stanford Cardinal. Davis had been committed to the Nittany Lions since March but began looking elsewhere after the team’s firing of James Franklin last month. The Tar Heels beat out West Virginia for his service after they hosted him a couple of weeks ago for their game against TCU.
Davis, the No. 382 overall prospect and No. 26 athlete in the 2026 class according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, is in the midst of his senior season at Imani Christian Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. So far this season, in nine games, he has registered 23 total tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, four interceptions and six pass breakups on defense and has totaled 927 scrimmage yards and 13 total touchdowns on 48 touches on offense.
Davis, who measures in at 6’0, 190 lbs., is another versatile piece that the staff has added to this class. He spent most of his time this season at the deep safety spot and has looked really good in that role. He looks very fluid getting in and out of breaks and has plenty of speed that allows him to break on the football. He is a player that shines in zone defense because of those attributes and his ability to read the eyes of the quarterback. He isn’t put in 1-on-1 coverage often, but when he is, he holds his own. He feels like a good fit at safety, but they could also be looking to use him at corner as he is listed on other recruiting sites. He has the potential to play early, as well, when he arrives to Chapel Hill next year.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels are back up to 36 commitments in the 2026 class and the ninth commit in the defensive backfield in this cycle. The class remains 15th nationally and 4th in the ACC according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
