The Tar Heels are looking to close out the 2025 class strong on Wednesday and the team has started the day off strong.

As first reported by Don Callahan of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have flipped the commitment of 2025 unranked DL Trey Giddens from Navy. His commitment comes after Tar Heels general manager Michael Lombardi extended him the offer over the weekend via a phone call. Giddens had been committed to the Midshipmen since mid-December and also held offers from Appalachian State, Campbell, James Madison, Liberty, Marshall and West Virginia. Virginia, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion were also recently expressing interest.

Giddens just concluded his prep career at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, VA. As a senior this past season, he was awarded first team all-state honors. Unfortunately, his high school stats are not made available.

The thing that jumps off the screen when you throw on Giddens tape is his quick release and burst off the line of scrimmage, which makes him an issue for slower reacting guards. In general, he does a good job of shedding blocks and uses a combination of bull rush and technical moves to be able to do it. Just like a lot of the team’s recent commits, he has a high motor that allows him to be involved in plays down the field that most interior defensive linemen would be. At 6’3, 275 lbs., Giddens has a nice frame that the team will hope to add to when he gets to campus. The most important area of improvement for him is going to be adding more of that physical edge to his game and strength in the weight room to help him navigate what is always a steep learning curve for trench players. This is another quality upside pickup to add to an interior defensive line room that is in need of depth.

With the commitment, the Tar Heels recruiting class is now up to officially 23 commitments in the 2025 class. The class remains 43rd overall and 10th in the ACC according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
