On Friday afternoon, the Tar Heels released some important scheduling news about a future home-and-home matchup.

In a release from the program earlier this afternoon, it was announced that the upcoming home-and-home series with the South Carolina Gamecocks has been canceled. The two teams were set to meet in Columbia in 2028 and Chapel Hill in 2029.

According to reports from Noah Weiskopf of TarHeel247 and Shelby Swanson of the News & Observer, the cancellation stems from the South Carolina side of things and the Tar Heels remained interested in the home-and-home series being played. This news also follows the announcements from both the ACC and SEC that they were moving to nine game conference schedules starting in 2026.

With the Gamecocks off the schedule for 2028, the Tar Heels are now set to face Kennesaw State and North Carolina A&T at home. Meanwhile, in 2029, the team currently has zero non-conference games scheduled.

The team also had a game with James Madison that was scheduled for 2027 moved back to 2031 on Friday.

This news was certainly disappointing because it was definitely a series that most Tar Heel fans were looking forward to and was supposed to continue developing the rivalry between the two teams. The hope is that the Tar Heels will be able to replace this series accordingly with some power conference opponents that will provide a nice test and give the team a chance to pick up a signature win along the way.
