The Tar Heels are still in the process of adding to their 2025 roster and the team has turned its attention to another Florida transfer, this time in the defensive backfield.
According to a report from John Garcia Jr. of Rivals this weekend, Florida transfer safety Gregory Smith III is currently visiting Chapel Hill following his recent trip to Miami. The redshirt freshman will have three years of eligibility remaining at the college level.
Smith, a former 4✮ prospect in the 2024 class, played in five games, including the bowl game, in his lone season in Gainesville, allowing him to maintain a year of eligibility. In those five games, he logged 100 snaps and registered five total tackles and one pass defensed. Prior to that, in his final seasons at the high school level he collected 29 tackles, four pass break ups, one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Smith would be another welcome addition to the Tar Heels safety room that has undergone a massive overhaul this offseason. While he may not start over some of the other veteran options that the team has in the room, he has the raw talent to come in and play an even bigger role than he had as a true freshman last year.
