The Tar Heels are still looking for upgrades on the defensive side of the ball and the team has just added another transfer to their safety room.
As first reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from Florida safety Gregory Smith II, who will have three years of eligibility remaining at the college level. Smith chooses the Tar Heels over Purdue and Miami, the two teams he visited outside his trip to Chapel Hill last week. This commitment comes following Armond Hawkins in-home visit with the team yesterday after he was beginning to trend towards the Boilermakers.
Smith, a former 4✮ prospect in the 2024 class who measures in at 6’3, 211 lbs., played in five games, including the bowl game, in his lone season in Gainesville, allowing him to maintain a year of eligibility. In those five games, he logged 100 snaps and registered five total tackles and one pass defensed. Prior to that, in his final seasons at the high school level he collected 29 tackles, four pass break ups, one interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Smith gives the Tar Heels another promising piece at the safety spot to pair with holdovers like Will Hardy and Malcolm Ziglar and winter portal additions Coleman Bryson and Peyton Waters. If he can have a strong enough showing in fall camp, he has the talent to be a major contributor as early as the season opener against TCU.
