After a quiet last 36 hours in the transfer portal for the Tar Heels, the team has picked up its latest portal commitment and it is one that fills a need that popped back up this season when they lost one of their commits to another school.

As first reported by Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from Lehigh transfer wide receiver Mason Humphrey. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Humphrey, who measures in at 6’4, 215 lbs., is coming off of a successful career with the Hawks at the FCS level where he played in 37 games across three seasons. He is coming off a career year where he caught 35 of his 63 targets for 650 yards and four touchdowns and averaged a career-high 18.6 yards per catch. In his career, Humphrey has caught 100 of his 192 targets for 1,586 yards and ten touchdowns and averaged 15.9 yards per carry.

This is a much-needed explosive downfield threat for a Tar Heel offense that simply didn’t have that type of player this past season. There may be some concerns about him coming up from the FCS level, but this is a worthwhile flier for the team, especially with what seems to be a restricted budget.
