Heel Tough Blog: Two Tar Heels Receive Mid-Season Recognition

With the Tar Heels playing their sixth game of the year, we have officially reached the halfway point of the college football season and some Tar Heels are starting to get some midseason recognition.
The Sporting News released their midseason All-American team and a Tar Heel who is off to a great start to the season was among those recognized. Sophomore defensive tackle Xavier Lewis is a member of Bill Bender’s All-American team after collecting 30 total tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks and 25 total quarterback pressures in 354 snaps across the first six games of the season. Lewis’s story has been an amazing one to follow so far this season and there is no reason to believe that he won’t be able to keep this up in the second half of the season.
Meanwhile, junior wide receiver Jordan Shipp was named a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award. According to the description on Jason Witten’s official website, the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award is presented annually to the FBS college football player who has demonstrated a record of leadership by exhibiting exceptional courage, integrity and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
So far this season, Shipp leads the Tar Heels in receptions (33) and receiving yards (441) and found the end zone for the first time this season on Saturday in the win over Duke. No one has really been able to slow him down to this point and the hope is that he can duplicate his early season success in the second half of the season.
