The Tar Heels may have lost every member of the placekicker room that was with the team in the spring over the last two days, but the team has found their newest competitor for the starting kicking job.

As he revealed via social media, Marshall transfer kicker Rece Verhoff has committed to the Tar Heels after entering the transfer portal yesterday. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Verhoff spent the last three years as Marshall starting kicker, kicking in 37 of the team’s 39 games during that stretch. It started in 2022 as a freshman where he nailed 33 of his 35 extra points and went 13 of his 20 field goal attempts. He followed that up in 2023 by nailing all 32 of his extra point attempts, but hit just 11 of his 18 field goal attempts. This past season, as a junior, he once again hit every extra point attempt that he looked at and was more accurate on field goals, hitting 14 of his 19 attempts.

Verhoff is a solid addition to this room and should compete for the starting job with true freshman summer enrollee Guytano Bartolomeo, but he is far from automatic and doesn’t provide a lot of length beyond 50 yards. The team should still be looking to add to this battle in the coming days if there is a legitimate option that they believe could be the solution for a kicking game that will need to be solid based on what we saw from the offense the other night in the ‘Practice Like a Pro’ event.
