After landing their first portal commitment on Sunday morning, the Tar Heels added their second in the form of versatile offensive lineman on Sunday afternoon.
As first reported by Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from Charleston Southern offensive tackle transfer Andrew Threatt during his visit to Chapel Hill that began yesterday morning. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
Threatt, an unranked prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, is an offensive lineman that provides some versatility having played every position but center along the offensive line in his time with Charleston Southern where he has played 1,888 snaps and started 32 consecutive games. This season was graded out as his best by Pro Football Focus, as he finished with a 72.5 run blocking grade, a 77.4 pass block grade and a 74.5 overall grade in 709 snaps on his way to earning first team All-OVC-Big South honors for his effort. In 381 pass block reps, he did allow six sacks and 17 total quarterback pressures and he was also called for five penalties, so those are areas that he will have to work on.
The year prior, most of his 688 reps came at the left guard spot and he graded out with a 61.7 run block grade, a 58.2 pass block grade and a 60.8 overall grade while allowing one sack and 13 total quarterback pressures. As a freshman, he spent all but two of his 491 snaps at right tackle and graded out with a 57.7 run block grade, a 59.2 pass block grade and a 58.7 overall grade while allowing one sack and 18 total quarterback pressures.
This is a nice start for the Tar Heels along an offensive line that has been ravaged by graduations and portal departures. Coming into the day, the Tar Heels had just four players (Aidan Banfield, Eidan Buchanan, Jordan Hall and Christo Kelly) that have played offensive snaps at the college level in the room, so adding a guy that was an all-conference caliber player at his previous stop will be more than welcome. The concern about the jump from the FCS level to the Power 4 level is definitely there and you would like to see him improve a little bit in pass protection because he will be going up against much better athletes, but this is a solid addition to a room that should see multiple commitments here in the next couple of weeks.
