After entering the day with zero commitments ranked inside the top 500 according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, the Tar Heels have landed two in one day. The most recent one comes in the form of a 4✮ edge rusher, the first 4✮ prospect that the team has landed in this cycle.
As first reported by Inside Carolina on Sunday afternoon, the Tar Heels have picked up a commitment from 2027 4✮ EDGE Brayden Booth. Booth’s commitment comes as he concluded his official visit to Chapel Hill, one where it felt the Tar Heels had work to do to top the work that had been put in by Baylor this offseason. Clearly the Tar Heels knocked it out of the park and found a way to secure their most significant commitment in terms of ranking in this class.
Booth, the No. 219 overall prospect and No. 21 edge rusher in the class according to Rivals Industry Rankings, hails from South San Antonio High School in San Antonio, TX. This past year, as a junior, Booth racked up 85 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and nine quarterback hurries in just nine games.
Booth, who measures in at 6’4, 217 lbs. brings a very promising frame and skillset to the table. The first thing that stands out on his sophomore film, which is the only available for him at this point, is his speed at his size. That speed makes him difficult for opposing offensive tackles to stay in front of and, when you combine it with his incredibly high motor, allows him to run down running backs and receivers downfield. He has a quick release off the line of scrimmage, as well, that he combines with that speed and it allows him to constantly be in the opposing backfield creating pressure. He has a nice level of physicality that he has had to develop playing inside at defensive tackle and that time inside has also served him well in terms of progressing as a run defender. He will have to add some weight to his frame at the college level, but he is one of the best speed rushers in this class and could be set to make a significant impact at the college level when he arrives to Chapel Hill.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels now have 13 players committed in the 2027 class, including two players along the defensive front after entering the day with zero. His commitment provides the Tar Heels with a big jump in the Rivals Team Rankings, as they now sit No. 43 in the overall rankings and No. 11 in the ACC rankings.
