For the second time in the last couple of weeks, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment in the defensive backfield for the 2027 recruiting cycle.

As he announced via a live stream on Rivals' YouTube stream on Monday, 2027 3✮ S Chuck Roberts has committed to UNC over Miami, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington. His commitment comes after he was offered back in September and took a visit to Chapel Hill in November for the team’s game with the Stanford Cardinal.

Roberts, the No. 426 overall prospect and No. 39 safety in the 2027 class according to the Rivals Industry rating, just recently concluded his junior season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL. In nine games this season, he amassed 50 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, an interception and three pass breakups.

According to Rivals, he allowed just three passes to be caught the entire season. In eight games the previous season, he collected 17 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks and three pass breakups in his first season with IMG. In his freshman season at Bishop Academy in Mission Hills, CA, he finished with second team All-Freshman honors from MaxPreps after piling up 104 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble.

Roberts (is a versatile safety who brings with him some of the best coverage skills for someone at his position in this class. He boasts a tremendous motor and strong speed that allows him to chase down plays from behind and recover if he takes a bad angle to the football. He does a good job of getting in and out of breaks so that he can stay with the twitchier receivers and thrives at reading quarterbacks and the football, which allows him to be in the right place at the right time to make plays when needed. He didn’t show it nearly as much on his junior film as he did on his sophomore film, but there is a nice level of physicality to his game, as well. This is a really promising addition to the Tar Heel secondary that has all of the tools to be a factor in his time in Chapel Hill.

With his commitment, the Tar Heels now have three commitments in the 2027 class, including two at the safety position. The class jumps to No. 18 overall and No. 4 in the ACC in the Rivals Industry Team Rankings.
