The Tar Heels have lost some significant depth at the wide receiver position from this year’s roster and that continued on Sunday evening.
As first reported by Inside Carolina, Tar Heels redshirt freshman wide receiver Alex Taylor is planning to enter his name into the transfer portal on January 2nd. He will have three years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
In his two seasons in Chapel Hill, Taylor played in 11 games, starting the final game of the season against NC State in the slot. In 165 total snaps between offense and special teams, he caught four passes for 42 yards on nine targets. This season, in 106 snaps, he was targeted just six times, which resulted in three catches for 27 yards, including just one catch for 15 yards in the season finale against NC State where he saw the most extensive action of his career (32 snaps).
His departure is the fifth of the offseason to the portal, meaning this will almost be a completely new room in 2026. The good news is that the team has retained Jordan Shipp to this point and they brought in a group of talented receivers from the high school ranks, but they may be relying on those true freshmen even more than they did this year in this position room. At this point, the staff needs to hit the portal when it opens to add at least some experience to this room.
