For the second time in this recruiting cycle, the Tar Heels have lost the commitment of one of their members of the 2026 class.
According to Rivals’ Hunter Shelton, 2026 3✮ ATH O’Mari Johnson has decommitted from the Tar Heels for the second time after recommitting to the team back on July 1st. Prior to that, Johnson had decommitted from the program back on May 30th after he had been committed since April 6th.
His decommitment comes as part of what is an expected flip to Ole Miss, who has expressed renewed interest in him in the midst of his senior season at Jackson Academy in Jackson, MS. It also appears that Ole Miss’s pitch to him includes playing him at wide receiver as opposed to the Tar Heels, who wanted to play him at corner.
With his decommitment, the Tar Heels lose their top committed corner in the class, but there are still three others committed to the class at this time. The class as a whole remains strong, ranked as the No. 17 overall class and the No. 4 in the ACC rankings with 36 total commitments. Many may be wondering if this is a result of the slow start to the Bill Belichick and it's hard not to think it wasn’t at least part of it when you factor in the start for Ole Miss, as well. Now the question becomes do more follow in his footsteps.
