While all of the focus is on the entry of edge rusher Beau Atkinson and rightfully so, the Tar Heels did lose a second member of their defense to the spring portal on Tuesday night.
According to multiple reports, redshirt freshman cornerback Zion Ferguson has entered his name in the spring transfer portal following the conclusion of Bill Belichick’s first spring practice in Chapel Hill. He will have four years of eligibility remaining wherever he eventually ends up.
Ferguson, a former 4✮ recruit out of high school that held 40+ offers, played just four snaps this season, all of which came on special teams. On defense, he was buried on the depth chart and remained in a similar spot this spring by all indications after the team added Washington transfer Thaddeus Dixon and pulled Ty Adams back out of the portal after his entry in the winter.
This is nowhere near the loss that the team suffered earlier in the evening, but it is a loss of depth at that cornerback spot. The good news is that the team does still have seven scholarship corners and a few guys at the safety position that can play out there as well if needed, so this shouldn’t be any sort of substantial loss.
