The transfer portal is set to open officially on Friday and on Wednesday the Tar Heels found out they will have 25 players that will be entering their names.

The latest addition, as first announced by Inside Carolina, will be true freshman running back Jaylon Nichols. He will have four years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

Nichols, a former 3✮ prospect in the 2025 class, enters the portal after just one season in Chapel Hill. He did not play in a single game this season for the Tar Heels after a productive prep career at Neville High School in Monroe, LA. He earned first team All-District 2-5A after carrying the ball 219 times for 1,417 yards and 24 touchdowns and catching 15 passes for 110 yards in 12 games as a senior.

The Tar Heels have lost two running backs to the portal, but should be fine in terms of depth. Crew Davis will join the room this year to help provide some depth, but filling the shoes of the departed Davion Gause is important. The holdovers might be able to take care of that with another year under their belt, but you can’t rule out the team going after someone with experience in the portal.
