It flew under the radar a bit on Monday night, but the Tar Heels lost their second tight end commitment in the 2026 class in the last week on Monday night.
As he announced via social media, 2026 3✮ TE Aidan Woods flipped his commitment from UNC to West Virginia. He had been committed to Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels since June 24th, but began looking elsewhere recently and took an official visit to Morgantown over the weekend for the team’s game with Colorado.
With his decommitment, he becomes the fifth decommitment from the class in the last twelve days and the second tight end, joining fellow 3✮ Cooper McCutchan, who decommitted last Wednesday. Even with all of these decommitments, the Tar Heels still have 35 players committed to a class that still ranks 15th overall in the 2026 class rankings according to 247Sports Composite.
As for the tight end spot, the team still remains in good shape despite the two defections. 4✮ Carson Sneed and 3✮ Aveon Williams remain solidly committed to the class at this time and the team is pushing hard to add another commitment here. The team just hosted 4✮ Gavin Mueller and 3✮ ArMari Towns over the weekend and previously hosted 3✮ Marcus Monroe and 3✮ Gavin Gregory. The team also is set to host unranked Nathaniel Salmon midweek next week and 3✮ Dream Rashad for the game against Duke, so there are plenty of targets at the position and the prevailing thought is that the team will be able to fill the void left behind by these to decommitments.
