Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose Starting OL to Portal

The transfer portal officially opened on Monday morning and the Tar Heels have lost two significant pieces already.

Following the reports of Amare Campbell entering the portal earlier this morning, Tar Heel Illustrated is reporting that graduate center Austin Blaske is entering his name into the transfer portal after just one season in Chapel Hill. He will have one year of eligibility wherever he eventually lands.

In Blaske’s lone year with the team, he was one of the biggest successes for the Tar Heels on the offensive side of the ball. He played in and started eleven of the team’s twelve regular season games and played the fifth most snaps of anyone on the offensive side of the ball this season. He graded out incredibly well in pass protection, earning an 85.6 pass block grade and allowing zero sacks and five quarterback pressures, numbers that should have been enough to earn him All-ACC honors. While he didn’t grade out nearly as well as a run blocker, posting a 60.7 grade, it was still a very solid grade and he was effective enough to help the team run for 189.5 yards per game this season.

This is another significant loss for the team, especially when you combine it with the loss of Zach Greenberg and Andrew Rosinski, the other two players who took snaps at center for the team in games or in practice. This is a spot where the team is going to have to dip into the transfer portal once again to find his replacement, something that won’t be easy to find. The best-case scenario is that whoever takes over for Mack Brown makes him a priority and finds a way to get him to return.
