The Tar Heels got one starter back out of the portal earlier today but lost another just moments later.
On Wednesday afternoon, Tar Heel Illustrated’s Andrew Jones revealed that starting placekicker Noah Burnette is entering his name into the transfer portal. Burnette will have one year of eligibility remaining.
Burnette played in 36 games in his four seasons in Chapel Hill, handling the starting role for the team at the placekicker position in 35 of those. In the three seasons that he handled the kicking duties for the team, he hit 137-139 extra points and made 49-62 field goals. His 79.0% field goal percentage is the second best in program history amongst full-time kickers behind only Casey Barth. Last year was Burnette’s best season where he nailed every one of his 43 extra points and was 19-20 on field goals. This year, he took a step back, missing an extra point and going just 15-21 on field goals, including key misses against NC State.
With him in the portal, the Tar Heels will turn to true freshman Lucas Osada for the bowl game. If he looks the part, it may deter the Tar Heels from hitting the transfer portal to find a reliable option for next season.
