The defensive line is a position where the Tar Heels were expecting to retain a lot of guys, but they have lost a couple of members to the transfer portal in the last few days.

As first reported by Chris Hummer of 247Sports, true freshman defensive lineman Devin Ancrum is entering the transfer portal after just one season with the program. He will have four years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

In his lone season in Chapel Hill, Ancrum played in just two games, leading to a redshirt. In the 22 defensive snaps that he played over the first two games, he failed to register a tackle, but did produce one quarterback pressure. Back at the high school level, he finished with 182 tackles, 42.0 tackles for loss and 12 sacks during his four-year prep career.

With all of the team’s major contributors at defensive tackle coming back, this is not a significant loss when it pertains to this season. Ancrum was still a guy who had nice upside, though, so it does hurt a little bit for the future, but the incoming true freshmen will be able to ease that pain, especially if they can become contributors early in their Tar Heel tenures.
