The Tar Heels may be in the middle of spring practice, but the team has just added another offensive lineman who will be a part of the roster in 2026.

As he announced via social media earlier this afternoon, 2026 3✮ IOL Cristian Alvarez has committed to UNC to participate in both football and wrestling. Alvarez had previously been committed to UMass, but flipped and signed with Delaware during the early signing window back in December. Back in late February, Alvarez received news from the NCAA that he had been released from his letter of intent which allowed him to turn his attention to the Tar Heels.

Alvarez, the No. 2163 overall prospect and No. 205 interior offensive lineman in the 2026 class according to Rivals Composite Rankings, hails from St. Joseph Regional School in Montvale, NJ. This past year, he was a part of an offensive line that plowed the way for an offense that averaged 144.0 passing yards and 132.8 rushing yards per game. As a wrestler, he won New Jersey’s heavyweight title in Atlantic City last month.

Alvarez might be a low ranked prospect, but there are some things that jump off the page with his film. As expected, there is a nice level of physicality that he plays with at the point of attack, something that you love to see. The wrestling background shows up in his upper body, as he simply tosses guys aside in the run game to pile up pancake blocks. His footwork and lateral movement look solid, but are the main reason that he is likely to kick inside at the next level. Regardless of where he plays, he does bring some good athleticism to the table based off of how he looks on pull and screen blocks. The level of competition is definitely something worth noting and could make the learning curve a little steeper than others in this class, but he has a chance to surprise some people if he sticks with football over the next few years.

His commitment taking place when it did means that he will be joining the team in the summer and will participate in fall camp.
