The Tar Heels haven’t made many additions in this portal cycle that have excited but the one they made on Tuesday night sure did.

As first reported by Inside Carolina, Richmond transfer LB Peyton Seelmann has committed to the team following a visit to campus that concluded on Monday. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Seelmann, who measures in at 6’1, 225 lbs., spent the last two seasons in Richmond, playing in 25 games across the two seasons. This season, he started all 12 games and collected 120 total tackles (top ten in all of college football), 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, nine total quarterback pressures, two interceptions, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the way to earning first team All-Patriot League honors. Seelman was also outstanding in coverage, allowing 29 of his 38 targets to be caught for just 201 yards and no touchdowns. In the game against the Tar Heels this season, he finished with a team-high nine total tackles and one total quarterback pressure.

This is a really strong addition for the Tar Heels at a major position of need for the team. Seelmann is a guy who should be able to navigate the FCS to Power 4 curve and has a chance to give the Tar Heels better production in pass coverage than they got from their linebackers this season. Expect a successful two years from him in the middle of this defense. Now the team’s attention should be on finding another starting caliber linebacker that can play alongside him for at least the early part of this season.
