In the midst of all the portal commits and portal entries, there was a big re-signing for the Tar Heels that took place as well on Sunday.

As the football program announced earlier this afternoon, the Tar Heels have agreed to a new deal with defensive tackle Isaiah Johnson to keep him in Chapel Hill for this upcoming season. Like with the other players who have re-signed, the terms of the deal are not made public at this time.

Johnson, who transferred in last year from Arizona, was a key part of the four-man rotation that the team had at defensive tackle this season, playing in all 12 games and starting three games. He finished this season with 40 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and seven total quarterback pressures in a career-high 330 snaps.

This is a massive retention for the Tar Heels, especially when you consider the losses of CJ Mims and D’Antre Robinson to the portal over the weekend. The job now is for the staff to find at least one other defensive tackle that can rotate with him and Leroy Jackson, who will likely take on bigger snap counts this coming season.
