Heel Tough Blog: Third Starting OL Planning to Enter Transfer Portal

David Beach- Cal Sport Media

The portal entries are flowing in from the Tar Heel football program with the majority coming on the offensive line. For the third time in the last 24 hours, the team has seen one of their starters from that unit enter the transfer portal as the team continues to push to land their next head coach.

As first reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, sophomore starting offensive tackle Howard Sampson is planning to enter his name into the transfer portal. Sampson will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

In his lone season in Chapel Hill after transferring from North Texas, Sampson played and started all twelve games of the regular season and played the second-most snaps of anyone on the team this season (824). He graded out solidly as a run blocker, earning a 65.6 grade from PFF, a grade that ranked third amongst the team’s five starters along their offensive front. He had his issues in pass protection despite grading out relatively well, allowing the second-most sacks (5) and quarterback pressures (18) on the team.

Sampson’s entry into the portal would mean that the Tar Heels will lose all but one starter from this year’s starting offensive line. While they had their ups and downs in pass protection, this group was clearly an upgrade over the units the team had in the previous two years. In total, the team has lost six offensive linemen to the portal, meaning there is a lot of work that will need to be done with this room whenever the new coach arrives.
