The Tar Heels and their new front office are hitting the transfer portal hard out of the gate and it appears that the team has their latest target, this time someone that could help them on the wing.
According to The Portal Report, the Tar Heels are one of fifteen schools that have been in contact with West Virginia transfer wing Jonathan Powell. The Tar Heels are joined by schools like Clemson, Louisville and Ole Miss that are pushing to land him.
This season, as a freshman, the Centerville, OH native started 23 of the Mountaineers 32 games this season and averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. He shot 38% from the field overall and 35% from 3-point range with the majority of his shots coming from the perimeter. Of his 251 shots this season, 72.5% of them came from the outside.
This would be a nice addition on the wing for the Tar Heels and would help boost the perimeter shooting for a team that needs to get better there next season and will have to do so without RJ Davis. It would also be a very solid replacement for Drake Powell if he was to enter the NBA Draft, which is certainly on the table with him being projected as a first round pick.
