The Tar Heels are continuing to crack the top schools list for some of their top targets in the 2026 class and did so again on Friday with one of the nation’s top receiver prospects.
Per On3 Sports recruiting reporter Hayes Fawcett, 2026 4✮ WR Travis Johnson has cut his list down to seven schools, one of them being UNC. The Tar Heels are joined by Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Penn State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech as the teams that are left in the hunt for him.
This move to narrow down his list comes after a month full of unofficial trips, which did include a stop in Chapel Hill back on March 8th. As of right now he has official visits scheduled to every school on his list except the Tar Heels, something that will hopefully be resolved sooner rather than later.
Johnson, the No. 137 overall player in the class and No. 19 wide receiver in the 2026 class according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, hails from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, VA. This past season, as a junior, he finished with 1,044 yards and 15 touchdowns on his way to earning first team all-state honors and helping Oscar Smith win the 6A state title. The year prior, as a sophomore, he finished with 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns.
When it comes to where his recruitment stands right now, it feels like it is a pretty wide open race going into the official visits. If there is a leader, it appears to be Penn State, but the Tar Heels still have an opportunity here if they can land that official visit and show him that he is a priority.
