Today has been another day full of portal entries and the biggest one of the day comes from a member of the offensive line whose role became expanded as the season went along.
As he announced via social media, redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Miles McVay will be entering his name into the transfer portal when it officially opens on January 2nd. The former Alabama transfer will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
In McVay’s lone season with the Tar Heels, he played 180 snaps, including 164 on offense, in eight games this year. Towards the end of the season, he became a part of the rotation at both tackle spots, playing his most snaps in the season finale against NC State (47 at left tackle). In his 164 snaps, McVay graded out with a 66.5 run block grade, a 77.1 pass block grade and a 69.4 overall grade while allowing two sacks and eight total quarterback pressures.
His departure is a fairly significant one for the team considering the promise that he showed late in the season and the departures the team already has at the position. With him gone, the only returning players that played snaps at offensive tackle this season are Jordan Hall and Eidan Buchanan. The team did add J.B. Shabazz and Nick Fiumara from the high school ranks on Wednesday, but this is a position where the team is going to have to hit the portal hard to find starting caliber and rotational players to form a serious unit for next season.
