Heel Tough Blog: UNC to Host 2025 Five-Star Prospect

The Daily Hoosier

The transfer portal dominates the headlines this time of the year, as it is the best way for teams to rebuild their roster for the upcoming season. At the expense of the popularity of the transfer portal, is high school recruiting, which is still important to building and establishing your program, but it’s no longer as popular as it was five years ago. With that, you might’ve missed out on knowing that UNC is set to host five-star prospect, Darryn Peterson after it was believed he was headed to Lexington to play for John Calipari, but that has changed since Calipari left for Arkansas. .

Peterson is a 6-5 shooting guard from Huntington, West Virginia, and is ranked as the No. 3 shooting guard in the 2025 recruiting class. As you can imagine he’s the top player from the state of West Virginia, and the top shooting guard from the state as well. According to 247Sports, Peterson is set to visit UNC first, followed by Ohio State, and you guessed it, Arkansas.

You’d love for Peterson to be an option to add to the roster for next season, after Carolina lost Seth Trimble to the transfer portal, and is still awaiting the decision from R.J. Davis. But with Ian Jackson most likely to be a one-and-done prospect, Peterson, could be a replacement option if Jackson turns pro after just one season in Chapel Hill. In any case, this is further evidence that Carolina Basketball will still recruit at the highest level at the high school level, something that Hubert Davis vowed when he was hired, even knowing the importance of the transfer portal.

Make sure to stay tuned in to the Heel Tough Blog, for the latest on the transfer portal, and high school recruiting.
