The Tar Heels have been trying to find some consistent threats at the wide receiver position and one of the guys who was brought in to play in the slot is no longer with the team.

According to a report from Inside Carolina, Aziah Johnson, a transfer from Michigan State in the winter portal, has left the team after just three games with the program.

Johnson played in just one game this season, logging five snaps in the team’s game with Charlotte. In those five snaps, he registered one reception for six yards and a drop on two targets.

Prior to his time in Chapel Hill, Johnson spent two seasons at Michigan State. In those two seasons, Johnson played in 16 games, including all twelve this season. After not registering a single target in 2023, he caught 16 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns and dropped just one pass on 25 targets as a redshirt freshman in 2024.

His departure does not deem a significant blow to the wide receiver room despite the search for more consistency from the unit. Both Alex Taylor and Javarius Green had overtaken him on the depth chart and will be where the team’s focus is to find a contributor in the slot.
