Heel Tough Blog: #1 Player, Gregory "GG" Jackson Decommits From UNC

thestate.com

After almost two weeks of speculation, Gregory “GG” Jackson has officially backed out of his commitment to UNC and will pursue other opportunities to pursue a career of playing basketball professionally. Jackson committed to Hubert Davis earlier this spring, and after being offered the chance to enroll early and join a national title contender this season, Jackson passed, as he claimed he wasn’t ready to play basketball at the level of the ACC. Now it is believed that with his decommitment from UNC, he will enroll early at nearby South Carolina, and be the face of the Gamecock program in 2022, as they usher in a new era in Columbia. Jackson was the first #1 player to commit to UNC since Harrison Barnes did so back in 2010, thus UNC will have to wait a little while longer to land such a player.

With this move almost inevitable, Hubert Davis got active on the recruiting trail to find possible replacements in the 2023 class. Davis has since offered prospects Zayden High and TJ Power, both four-star prospects, with plenty of room to grow over the next year or so.

When Jackson committed to UNC, it was believed that he, along with fellow five-star commit, Simeon Wilcher was a package deal. With Jackson no longer part of the future of UNC Basketball, there isn’t a belief that Wilcher will follow suit, and back out of his now near-year-long commitment, leaving Carolina with at least one headline player as we enter the final stretch of the summer circuit for 2022.
