The Tar Heels are looking for another linebacker commit in the 2026 class and on Sunday, one of their top targets to do that announced his decision date.
2026 4✮ LB Calvin Thomas announced via social media on Saturday night that he will be revealing his college decision on July 12th. The decision will come down to UNC, Michigan, Nebraska, SMU and Texas, the top five that he announced back on June 5th and officially over the past two months. His official visit to Chapel Hill came back on the weekend of May 30th where the staff seemed to establish themselves as a legit threat in this recruitment.
Thomas, the No. 254 overall prospect and No. 18 linebacker in the 2026 class according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, hails from Cypress Ranch High School in Cypress, TX. This past season, as a junior, he finished with 69 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, an interception, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery on his way to earning first team All-District honors. The previous year, Thomas played in just five games, racking up eight total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 0.5 a sack and one quarterback hurry.
As we get close to the decision, it is Texas that seems to have the lead for him following their official visit that closed down the month. It will be interesting to monitor 4✮ LB Kosi Okpala’s commitment, though, to see if that has any affect on his decision.
