Yesterday the Tar Heels announced that they are playing Memphis in a charity exhibition game in the middle of October, the first time the program has chosen to do such a thing. That news followed the announcement that they’ll also host Johnson C. Smith in an exhibition, fulfilling the two exhibition maximum that college programs can have before the season gets underway. What wasn’t known, was when the annual Blue/White scrimmage would be, until today, when they made that information known.
The Blue/White scrimmage has been an annual preseason event, that would kickoff the start of basketball practice. The scrimmage used to be at midnight on October 15th, but as rules changed, so did the event, which turned into a family filled night, with games and dances to go along with the scrimmage. This year, the Blue/White scrimmage will be held like it is every year, but this year it will take place off campus, as they will play it at Harrah’s Cherokee Resort Event Center, on Sunday October 13th, two days before the exhibition against Memphis.
After Hubert Davis was hired following the retirement of Roy Williams, UNC rebranded their kickoff event from Late Nite With Roy Williams, to Live Action With Carolina Basketball. Over the years, attendance has dropped, and with ACC Network, many fans chose to stay home and watch it on TV. With the emergence of NIL, it was time for a revamping of event, and that’s exactly what this will provide, despite it not being held in Chapel Hill.
