After much thought, Matt Norlander, senior CBS Sports college basketball writer, is reporting that RJ Davis has decided to return to Chapel Hill for the 2024-25 season, for what will be his super senior season. Davis is coming off a historic season, that saw him be named the ACC Player of the Year while earning multiple All-American honors after the Tar Heels season came to an end in the Sweet 16. Davis had to weigh the option of either turning pro, like Harrison Ingram did earlier this off-season, or returning for a fifth season like Armando Bacot did last year. With Davis set to return for a fifth season, he’s now in line to set many records at UNC, that’ll likely never be broken.

Last season, Davis led Carolina in scoring at over 21.2 points per game, while shooting 43% from the field, and 40% from behind the arc, as he increased his point-per-game total by over 5 points.

There’s no denying that NIL played a role in Davis’s decision to return to Carolina, combined with the fact that his draft stock made it hard for him to take that leap. Davis easily becomes the biggest addition for Hubert Davis, as he’s been busy since the season-ending loss to build the best roster possible for 2024-25. This news comes on the same day that Seth Trimble announced his decision to withdraw from the transfer portal and return to UNC, further boosting the backcourt, which will feature a sophomore Elliot Cadeau, and an incoming five-star freshman Ian Jackson. With Davis back for next season, Carolina will likely be a preseason top-10 team, while being a favorite to win the ACC and make a return trip to the Final Four.
