Heel Tough Blog: Heels Miss Out on Top Rutgers Transfer

Updated: May 5

After missing out on Aaron Bradshaw, Danny Wolf and Jonas Aidoo, the Tar Heels have now missed out on Clifford Omoruyi, the Rutgers transfer who has committed to Alabama over Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels. Carolina hosted Omoruyi on an official visit on Thursday, his last visit of his transfer portal recruitment, but still decided to play his last season of college basketball, somewhere other than Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels have been aggressive in trying to find a replacement for Armando Bacot, to put themselves in the best position possible to win a national championship, with RJ Davis back for his super senior season. With Omoruyi not in the fold, and they're not being another high-caliber big man in the portal, it puts a lot of pressure on Jalen Washington to take a massive step forward entering his junior season. If Carolina doesn’t add a big man in some capacity this off-season, that means that sophomore Zayden High, and incoming freshman James Brown will serve as the only depth pieces at the 5 spot for UNC in 2024-25. Needless to say, that’s a less-than-ideal situation.

After missing out on Omoruyi, Carolina now turns their attention to Kentucky transfer Adou Thiero, who they are hoping to bring in to replace Harrison Ingram, who left for the NBA. Hubert Davis and his staff went to Lexington last week to meet with Theiro, and after his name wasn’t entered in the NBA Draft, the hopes are high that he will end up at UNC. But Pittsburgh has made a sizeable NIL offer, and his former coach at Kentucky, John Calipari is recruiting him to come to Arkansas and join that roster of transfers.
