The roster moves aren’t the only news around the Carolina Basketball program, as it was reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, and confirmed by sources closer to the program, that Michael Malone has hired Kim English as an assistant coach, as part of his revamped coaching staff. It was reported last week that Malone would be retaining Sean May, Pat Sullivan, and Eric Hoots as holdovers from Hubert Davis’s coaching staff. He also poached away long-time assistant and recruiting wizard, Chuck Martin, from John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks. All of these coaching moves come after Marcus Paige left the UNC bench, after Hubert Davis was fired, to join Wes Miller’s staff at Charlotte.
English was fired as the head coach at Providence after three seasons on the job, after he went 21-14 in year one, but followed that up by going 12-20 and 15-18. He landed in the Big East after two seasons at George Mason, where he went 34-29 in two seasons with the Patriots.
His coaching career comes after a stellar career at Missouri, where he played four seasons, and averaged 11.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists, while shooting 42% from the field and 39% from behind the arc. During his four seasons with the Tigers, he was named to the All-Big 12 team twice, was named to the 2012 All-Big 12 Tournament team, and was named the 2011-12 Big 12 Tournament Most Valuable Player.
English will serve as an assistant under Michael Malone, joining the aforementioned Chuch Martin, Sean May, and Pat Sullivan on the UNC bench.
