Heel Tough Blog: Michael Malone Adds High Level Gonzaga Assistant to UNC Staff

With the roster all but set for next season, and the 2027 recruiting class taking form, the only thing left for Michael Malone to do this summer was to complete his coaching staff for next season, and it appears that he’s done just that, adding Jorge Sanz to his UNC bench, Sanz, who has spent the last eight seasons in Spokane, announced his departure from the Gonzaga program, where he served not only as an assistant, but as the Director of Basketball Operations as well.
He was responsible for a multitude of different things within the Gonzaga program, but two of them that stick out as he’s set to join the UNC staff are his ability to recruit internationally and develop talent. He even brings with him a background in analytics, furthering the change in philosophy the Carolina Basketball program has undergone since firing Hubert Davis last March, in favor of Michael Malone, who has never coached a college basketball game as a head coach.
Sanz, who is a native of Spain, will give UNC an international recruiting presence that Malone has prioritized, given his ties overseas as a youth international coach, where he received the highest form of accreditation in coaching, “Entrenador Superior”.
Inside Carolina was first to report the news, as Sanz joins a coaching staff that consists of holdovers Sean May and Pat Sullivan from the Hubert Davis era, along with the additions of Chuck Martin (Arkansas), Pat Tibaldi (Providence), and former Tar Heels Brandon Robinson (Utah Jazz), and Deon Thompson, who retired from playing professionally overseas.
