Heel Tough Blog: NC State Transfer Officially Signs With UNC

After initially committing to UNC back in April, NC State transfer Matt Able has officially signed with North Carolina, as the UNC roster is slowly coming together under first-year head coach Michael Malone. Able played one season at NC State, where he averaged 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists, while shooting 42% from the field and 36% from behind the arc. In the Wolfpack’s blowout win over UNC last February, Able scored 19 points, while going 6-10 from the field, including 5-7 from behind the arc.

Able projects to be a starter for the Tar Heels in 2026-27, but he was invited to the NBA Draft Combine, which begins later this weekend in Chicago, and if he were to improve his NBA Draft stock, that would complicate his future in college basketball. He’s projects right now as a second round draft selection, if he were to get drafted, which would lead you to believe he’ll be back in college for his sophomore campaign.

According to 247Sports, Able is considered to be the No. 46 overall transfer in the 2026 cycle, while being ranked as the No. 5 shooting guard. He joins a revamped backcourt, which features Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas, Utah transfer Terrence Brown, and returnees from last year, Jaydon Young and Isaiah Denis.
